Introduction to Acrylic Painting and Creating Landscapes

Absolute beginners: No experience required.
This fun in-person course will be offered for absolute beginners in acrylic painting. Children will learn: how to use acrylic paint (how water interacts with the paint), how to mix colors (color wheel, pastel colors, shades, etc), and how to mimic techniques for creating landscapes (how to draw sunsets, grass, clouds, etc). At the end of the course, students will use what they have learned to create their own landscapes.
Students will provide their own materials.
Materials (approximate cost: $20-40)
- Acrylic paints (white, yellow, red, dark blue, black) – Students are more than welcome to buy paint sets that include other colors besides the ones required for the course. Amazon and Michael’s have a great selection of paints, but the paints can be brought from anywhere. There is no specific paint brand you need to use, but Danielle highly recommends Arteza, Liquitex, or any acrylic paint set from Amazon. (However, she would not recommend buying Crayola washable acrylic paints, as they do not work like real acrylic paints)
- Acrylic paint paper – no specific brand of paper is required. Any thick paper will work. Watercolor paper will also work.
- Paintbrushes (a few various sizes, thin and thick brushes) – Amazon has some great brush sets that are only $7-10 and provide a variety of sizes.
- Optional – If a student is really interested in acrylic painting, he/she can buy other colors. Danielle recommends orange, green, purple, and brown, since these colors can be hard to mix for beginners. Students can also buy different hues of a color (for example, in addition to buying the required dark blue, a student can buy a light-colored, cyan blue).
- A few paper towels
- Any type of plastic cup (to hold water)
- A smock or t-shirt that might get paint on it
- Table easels and plastic art palletes will be provided.
About the instructor
Danielle Haniph
Danielle is a senior at St. Joseph High School, where she is the President of the Visual Art and Design Club. Danielle is the student leader of the AAS Monthly Youth Art Challenges, where she leads art discussions with children (grades 5-12) and tries to make the conversation as comfortable and fun as possible. She is the creator of “Art Out Fridays” on the AAS Instagram, and has participated as an interviewer and journalist in AAS’s Spotlight on Creatives.
Danielle has participated in many intensive art courses in using acrylic paint, including acrylic painting classes at the Rye Arts Center (Rye, NY) and the One River School of Art and Design (Hartsdale, NY). She was also accepted into New York University’s 2021 Steinhardt Pre-College Virtual Art Program, where she was instructed in acrylic painting.
Danielle has also had experience working with children in the “Trumbull Soars as One” Feather Mural Project. She created this project in collaboration with the Trumbull Nature and Arts Center (TNAC) this year (2021-2022). The project encourages Connecticut children to paint a feather that will be combined to create a colorful mural. The mural resembles a bird with outstretched wings and has come to represent a symbol of unity in Connecticut. Over 200 feathers have been painted. There are two murals: one at the TNAC and the other at the Trumbull Library. The project was featured in the Connecticut Post, Bridgeport Post, and the Trumbull Times.

Masks will be required by all participants in the art gallery. Hand sanitizer will be available at the door to the art gallery and shared spaces and tables will be thoroughly disinfected before and after class. As always, please do not come to class if you are feeling sick, if you have had an exposure to Covid within the last 5 days, or if you have the following symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue (with another symptom, sometimes we are just tired!)
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell

- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
